The number one obstacle to booking a photography session is often the challenge of picking out outfits for the shoot. No matter how well you prepare, the final photos can look a variety of ways depending on weather, location, and timing. I love photographing at the beach because no matter how many times I go to the same exact spot, the photos are always unique. Because of this, there’s a few points to consider when deciding on the color scheme of a photography session.
- Skin Tones. Go for colors that flatter the skin tones you have and avoid ones that don’t.
- Weather. It’s hard to predict, but try to imagine what your colors will look like with a sunny versus overcast background.
- Mood. What kind of mood are you going for? Playful, cheerful, simplistic, bold? Bright colors can be cheerful while neutrals simplify photos.
- Personality. Dress to represent who you are!
- Colors of the beach. Does the beach location have white sand or black sand? Or is it brown rocks? Green tropical trees? Orange sandstone bluffs? Each location has a natural color palette to consider.
Blues with Neutrals
In my opinion, blue is a perfect color choice for the beach. No matter what the weather is, blue makes for a cohesive image blending the subject with the environment. Pairing a variety of blue shades with creams, tans, or white creates a quintessential seaside portrait perfect for representing our beach community.

Neutrals or Soft Pastels
Neutrals and pastels create a muted palette and softens portraits and creates a dreamy mood.

Black and Dark Colors
If you want to up the drama for your photos, dress in darker colors. Black creates a nice contrast to a beach scene. It really helps the subject stand out from the background, and who doesn’t like wearing black? It also looks great in both overcast weather and sunshine.
